Should the UK use the navy to stop small boat crossings?

Yes 60%No 40%176 votes cast

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to be relentless in tackling small boat crossings in the Channel after a dinghy carrying 173 people capsized. Reform UK has proposed using the navy to stop the crossings. A former navy officer has criticised the plan as not feasible.

Yes won by three to two, but the room’s sharpest contradiction was that its most-respected argument came from No: “commit murder on the high seas” was the warning, while the winning side offered mostly low-rated demands for action. The result was clear; the hierarchy of persuasion was not.

Yes voters treated the crossings as a failure of border control, not primarily a rescue or policing problem. Their language ranged from “A land without a border is not a country” to the more practical claim that the “Navy needs to go there to create physical barrier”, with others arguing that Border Force had become a “taxi service” and that deterrence required turning boats back.

No’s case was narrower and more operational. Its most-respected voice asked whether stopping an unwilling dinghy meant opening fire or running it down, while another called the plan “counterproductive, unless you want to fire on unarmed civilians”; the alternative offered was action at source, against smugglers, suppliers and the demand that sustains them.

The two sides repeatedly talked past each other. Yes voters stressed the scale of arrivals, alleged risks from people whose backgrounds were unknown, and the limits of gang-crackdowns when “demand seems to be massive at the moment”; No voters challenged the leap from nationality to criminality, cited enforcement against organisers, and argued that a naval intervention could make the Channel more dangerous.

So this was a vote for visible control, but not a settled view of what control would require: the chamber endorsed the navy before it resolved the argument over what the navy could safely do.

“Also big boats . Border force ha ! Should stop being taxi service and law changed so anyone deliberately putting themselves in danger do not get lifeboats navy and helicopters out to save? Them”

“NO Simply because how do you stop a small boat that doesn't want to be stopped? Well I'll tell you, you'll have to either open fire on it or run over it, either way sink it!! Is anyone who says yes actually prepared to tell the RN to commit murder on the high seas?? Is this the new low level we've sunk to in our country?? The reality is only way to stop people arriving illegally is to up the rem”

Shocking 43% of respondents think protecting UKs border is unnecessary. A land without a border is not a country. Govt could stop this tomorrow but choose not to. Lies.Probably funded by UK taxes via NGOs etc. Labour like Democrats in US cannot win sans cheating & seek to create irreversible demographic change to bake in a permanent left majority. Fabians want one world govt by UN so any means justify ends. Most UK citizens have no idea of Agenda 2030 being imposed on them

If Border Force is not able to stop invasion, than military is there to protect us and our borders. Since it started in 2018 more than 200,000 mostly military age, sexually active men we know nothing about was placed among us. Criminals, terrorists, rapists? Yes, we already had examples. 200k is more than our military or police force. It has to be stopped and then reversed.
