Should the armed forces cut the number of senior officers?
The UK has no formal target to reduce senior military headcount, according to a July 2025 MoD letter to the Defence Committee. About 472 officers held one-star rank or above in 2025, split between the Army (211), Royal Navy and Royal Marines (134) and RAF (126). The Armed Forces have shrunk by roughly a third since the early 2010s, and critics say this leaves them top-heavy. In September 2026 the US announced a 20% cut to its own general and admiral posts.

If the Army are cutting numbers then they should be cut across the board. I personally feel like we should be trying to increase our Armed Forces numbers, but that's a different question.
You don't need the biggest military in peacetime. However, shrink it enough, & war eventually comes back, & then you need to expand, train & organise your military quickly. It takes years to train senior ranks, you can't do that quickly. It may look top heavy in peacetime, but their numbers in peacetime define the strength to which you can expand the military rapidly when you need to.
In an environment of reducing military numbers then it makes little sense to keep promoting ranks to make more chiefs than Indians. However, if a large increase in numbers is foreseen then it is prudent to maintain a surplus of motivated and experienced 'managers' at all ranks. It also makes sense to reduce the number of individuals that have reached the peak of their promotion potential.
It would be like a business employing managers without having anyone to manage. If they do not have specific duties that are adding value, then they either need to be reassigned or cut.
I’m voting no because I would expect the MoD to make the necessary decisions for their own budget and wouldn’t presume to know the ins and outs of what is required at each level.
If there are Military tasks which require a certain level of — specialism experience & status - to eliminate certain ranks is seriously self defeating. Real issue is our Armed Forces should not have been run down to these levels. Having sufficient qualified senior officers to interact with those of foreign powers is crucial. Interesting how the Civil Service never reduces the numbers of its senior people even when they consistently & expensively (for UK) fail.
We don’t need less senior officers….we need A LOT more regulars. The military needs a huge boost in numbers, equipment, intelligence and hardware. Much of this can be funded by stopping all illegal immigration, slashing the welfare bill (retain the state pension exactly as it is - it’s a right, not a benefit even though it’s a benefit officially) cutting foreign aid, seizing money from the OCG’s that run many businesses here etc.
We need to increase the number of people in the services not reduce them and experience in leading them will be beneficial.
These senior people did nothing wrong. Can they not finish their careers without being made redundant. This happens in every sector...
No! What needs to be done is increase the size of the armed forces by 40% without any increase in senior officers.
