Is Shabana Mahmood right to water down her plan to make migrants wait longer for settlement?

Indefinite leave to remain is currently available to most work-visa migrants after five years. The government is moving to a 10-year baseline under an "earned settlement" model, with changes starting from the December Immigration Rules. On 2 November 2026 Mahmood told MPs she was softening the plan after objections from Labour MPs and Cabinet ministers. Care workers already in the UK before May 2025 and earning at least £25,000 keep a five-year route, other lower-skilled workers face 10 years rather than 15, and those arriving by illegal routes face 20.

Simply because what's that last line about ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS!?! Laws are already there, if needed tweak. All criminals/law breakers cannot stay here, period. If that's their mindset to disrespect our laws even before landing here. You've got to go sunshine, nope it's just you've shown who you and what you think of us.

Letting hundreds of thousand of low paid workers in increases the welfare bill when it is already at breaking point is ludicrous. Those earning only 25k are very likely to be a net drain on the economy.

She serves the interests of her Qatari paymasters, not the British electorate.

I’m saying yes, but not because she’s right to “water them down”. She’s a rightwing racist zionist nutjob and her cruelty shouldn’t have been allowed anywhere near immigration issues in the first place.

The reforms didn’t go far enough, watering down is another betrayal by an incompetent government

There's a massive difference between stopping uncontrolled mass migration and punishing legal workers. If the government legally issues someone a visa, they shouldn't be trapped in a 10-year limbo. Control the border, but give documented workers a realistic path to citizenship.
