Should anyone getting an unemployment benefit be required to carry out community tasks such as litter picking?
UK unemployment benefits such as Universal Credit include job-search requirements and can involve work-related activity for claimants. Proposals for mandatory community tasks like litter picking appear in public discussion and similar policies in other countries, where they aim to reduce long-term dependency and deliver visible local improvements. Recent examples include time-limited benefits with required placements for able-bodied adults under 50.

Getting 'something for nothing' enables long term dependency and discourages any driver to improve. Learning and applying a practical skill improves employability, and giving back to the community benefits everyone.
