Should MPs and government departments stop using X, formerly Twitter?

No rule bars UK MPs or government departments from using X. Each department decides for itself, and Downing Street said in 2026 that it keeps its own use under review. Only two departments have left: the Attorney General's Office in June 2026 and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in July 2026. The Scottish Greens have also quit. Ofcom is still investigating X over Grok-generated sexualised images, and most departments still post there.

No, although I recommend caution. It's meant to be supporting free speech, until you give someone a real answer, with a link., It could be considered as spam.

X has its faults, mostly because its run by Elon Musk and hes fine spreading disinformation and allowing it to affect the UK, a lot of people get there views on this and other social media, so it's good mps can give their truth as opposed to listening to foreign entities who just wish to cause trouble.

Much as X has many faults - what is the alternative? Bluesky is a cesspit the other way, if you venture an opinion outside their groupthink - eg men cannot become women - you are hounded. Threads is full of daft yanks going on about washing meat, hygiene policing & how horrid the UK food is. I like to keep my instagram mostly free of news/politics, catering to my other interests. Govt agencies need to communicate where people are - and there’s still a lot of us on X

X is a complete cess pitt and has been since Musk took it over. Mostly Russian bots and right wing nut jobs. I say get rid...

Surely any method of communicating to the public is still important? Gov depts don't have to interact with Russian bots... Just post the information. Banning them is senseless.

It enables us to see their stupidity, their lies, their hypocrisy, their corruption, their complete hatred of indigenous white Britain’s -thus bringing this lots demise to an earlier end.

X is now run by a man who has repeatedly tried to interfere in UK politics and who controls what people see. It is simply not appropriate to give him official support. Individual ministers should of course be free to interact however they want, but official communications should be absent.

Its the only way we find out anything. Question Time, Sunday politics - a once avid viewer but politicians just avoid answering the questions so haven't watched in a year or so.

X is probably more reliable for news than most main stream media outlets, such is the state of the media today.

I sense that there would be outrage if the Public sector was prevented planting misinformation in the MSM. There was no whining pre Elon, as the Left wing censorship bias of Dorsey was deemed acceptable. Now alternative voices are permitted, cue predictable outrage & the usual abuse. If the Public sector & especially MPs use X they should not be allowed to block replies or mute responses. If they want a soap box they should tolerate a seriously good washing every now & again.
