Should MPs whose wealth soars while in office be investigated?
MPs must declare outside earnings, gifts, shareholdings and property in a public register within 28 days, and the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards investigates failures to do so. There is no automatic check on how an MP's overall wealth grows while in office. Unexplained wealth orders, available since 2017 to agencies like the National Crime Agency, can require people to explain assets that don't fit their known income. In 2026 the government said it backs banning most second jobs, and the Committee on Standards is reviewing outside interests.

Well obviously. No one* cares what you are worth before public office. We don't need to know who is being investigated unless there is something to report that's irregular/illegitimate - so intrusion and stigma is a weak excuse. The bonus might be more authentic & passionate people for the people left for the ballots. ⭐️ *well the ppl who equate wealth with wisdom to govern are . . . something. Edited
Yes, probability of fraud or bribery much higher than winning a Lotto.
All income whilst an MP should be fully disclosed to the public, and scrutinised for legitimacy
Provided it is done with explicit and objective criteria, this sort of scrutiny makes sense. There would always be the risk of it becoming a way to browbeat rivals or selectively enforce rules, which is why it would be important that it is fully independent and seen as beyond reproach itself, but where there appears to be something suspicious going on, then an investigation to determine the truth makes sense.
