Should school holidays be cut to match the 28 days of paid leave most working parents get?
State-maintained schools in England must open for 190 days a year (380 half-day sessions). Pupils get roughly 13 weeks of holiday, plus weekends and bank holidays, while statutory paid leave is 28 days (5.6 weeks) including bank holidays. Teachers must be available for 195 days, and academies set their own term dates. Wales planned a shorter summer break from 2025, but England has made no change.
