Should taxpayers be able to choose where part of their income tax is spent?

Income tax and National Insurance go into general government funds, and individual taxpayers cannot choose what they pay for. Ministers and Parliament decide spending. Taxpayers can see an Annual Tax Summary showing a percentage breakdown of how their contributions are spent. A Parliament petition published in March 2026 and open until 30 September 2026 asked for an annual scheme letting taxpayers allocate part of their income tax through the HMRC app or website. HMRC online accounts already use a Government Gateway ID, and a National Insurance number is used to verify identity.

An interesting idea: use a peppercorn amount to show sentiment. Like the few pence you give to charity at an online store.

You choose by electing a government, who take the responsibility of coherent, balanced government.
