Should the government scrap the £2bn Extended Producer Responsibility packaging levy?
The government is pressing ahead with the Extended Producer Responsibility regime, a £2 billion annual levy on packaging placed on the UK market. Defra says the scheme shifts waste costs from taxpayers, raises over £1 billion yearly and supports 25,000 jobs. The Bank of England, British Retail Consortium and major manufacturers say the levy is adding to food-price inflation.
