Should the two‑child benefit cap be reinstated in the UK?
The two-child limit on the child element of Universal Credit, introduced in 2017, was removed from 6 April 2026 under the Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Act. This now provides the child element worth around £3,500 a year for every child. The separate overall benefit cap remains, so around 50,000 larger families see no or partial gain. Reform UK has pledged to reinstate the limit for fiscal reasons while Labour calls it cruel.

I was gonna say no since it’s not the child’s fault to be born into poverty. But if a family is massively irresponsible, having more and more children they can’t afford the state can always intervene and take the child away from them. So at the end of the day other than the emotional side of things the child will always have state support.
We have a growing problem of hardworking taxpayers having to restrict family size due to affordability while benefit claimants are subsidised to have large families. This unaffordability is due to the high cost of living caused by a bloated state. As well as being grossly unfair, it lowers the quality of the gene pool.

Not to be cruel but I as an adult signed up to take responsibility for my own family not everyone else’s I’d of loved 3 or 4 kids but we took the decision that it would of been unaffordable but now I’m expected to pay for others no it’s not right or f as it to ask this
Working families have to make a decision on how many children they can afford, whereas those on benefits are effectively encouraged to have more children without the cap. I would be in favour of tax breaks to encourage working families to have more children than encourage benefits claimants to have more.
Being very blunt here to anyone who thinks it's easy to control the size of your family, believe me it is not. If there had been a 2 child benefit cap when my husband was unemployed temporarily, we would not have coped. It's living on subsistence level, and you are expected to save for emergencies. So, no, no, no do not bring back the 2 child benefit cap. Remember the question about mobile phones and falling birth rate?
The only people punished by such a cap would be the children born into already-poor families - and you cannot blame them for the circumstances of their birth. Removing the benefit cap would be an act of needless act of cruelty towards the children of the least well-off in society.
Small step for benefit Britain to the final destination - no state socialism at all.
