Would Just Stop Oil's traffic protests near Parliament undermine climate goals?

Just Stop Oil has used traffic blockades near Parliament and elsewhere to demand an end to new fossil fuel licences. The group ended its main campaign of disruptive protests in 2025 after Labour adopted a policy against new oil and gas licences, though the current Prime Minister Andy Burnham has signalled openness to some North Sea drilling. Studies show their actions raised the salience of fossil fuel licensing but often generated negative media coverage focused on disruption rather than climate science.

Of course it could. But the aim is to make people aware of problems opening up more tax and oil areas. To help get the message of climate change across is quite difficult, you can show all manner of facts and figures, and still get "yes, but we've always had changes in weather". Sad to say, the realisation of current climate change, with our adapting quickly to it, will not be accepted, until it is possibly too late.

Target the polluters and private jets, not delivery drivers and nurses trying to make a living. Just because a protest is near Parliament doesn't mean it's just inconveniencing the govt. The problem with these protests is it just turns climate change into a culture war focusing on traffic jams instead of corporate greed.

Their disruptive tactics just alienate the public and distract from climate goals, even though the underlying aim of tackling climate change has broad support

Trying to convince non-believers by terrorising them (or at least making their life miserable) is not the best way. But again Left politics and logic are quite separated from each other.
