Should parenting classes be compulsory for all new parents?

Parenting classes are not compulsory in the UK. Antenatal classes and parenting programmes are voluntary, offered through the NHS, councils and charities such as NCT. Since April 2026, Best Start Family Hubs have operated in every council area in England, offering free, voluntary parenting support, backed by over £900 million over 2026 to 2029. A 2016 plan from David Cameron's government sought to make classes socially normal through vouchers, not to make them mandatory.

Based on the extent of antisocial behaviour, and the fact that teachers regularly report having to do the job of parents themselves - even down to toilet training them - I think this is more than necessary.

Parenting classes should not be compulsory for all new parents as every family has different needs. making them mandatory could put extra pressure on parents already struggling with work , finances or childcare. Instead the government should offer free classes and extra support to families who need it so still helping parents learn without unnecessarily restricting their freedom

We do not need any more State over-reach into the private lives and freedoms of its citizens.

People are dumb and it seems to be the dumbest people mass breeding. Give the future half a chance.

I can’t see a negative side of sharing useful information if it’s communicated in the appropriate way. It needs to be framed as an opportunity to collect information that might be relative to you and your family rather than a list of do’s and dont’s. I do wonder how it would be enforced though!

I don't think compulsory classes will lead to much, other than resentment. I'm also hesitant about forceful state interference in people's private lives, and suspicious of HMG's susceptibility to fads. By all means make classes available, promote them, encourage parents to go - overall it's likely to be beneficial and a great public good - but don't make it obligatory.

No, a new parent will learn as any parent, a gp or hospital can suggest the courses available but it shouldn't be forced upon them.

No from me as long as it’s clear where the back up is if required
