Do you believe that most politicians are honest?

Yes 27%No 73%113 votes cast

Trust in UK politicians has fallen sharply, with surveys showing only about 12% of people believing governments prioritize national interests over party ones in recent years. Scandals, broken manifesto pledges on taxes and immigration, and perceptions of self-serving behaviour contribute to widespread cynicism. This question reflects ongoing frustration with how power affects integrity across parties.

There was no age or gender coalition here worth calling a divide, more a shared verdict arrived at from every direction: the young and the old, men and the handful of women who voted, all landed on the same side, with only the middle-aged 45-54 group even more emphatic in its distrust. That absence of fracture is itself the finding — cynicism about political integrity has stopped being a generational or partisan position and become close to background weather.

It sits squarely on the fault line of a decade of broken manifesto pledges, expenses rows and second-jobs scandals that has pushed public trust in politicians to levels surveys already put in single figures — this vote reads less like a fresh verdict than a confirmation of a settled mood. The 27% who said yes look less like optimists than the residue of people still willing to distinguish the individual MP from the class.

What little argument there was tilted the same way. The floor's most-respected Yes voice conceded the point almost before making it, writing that "most politicians believe they are honest. Until they get caught" — hardly a ringing defence. The top-rated No case was blunter still, describing politicians as "careerists, not peers" who "game their expenses for profit & bend to lobbyists" and represent only themselves.

When even your defenders sound like prosecutors, the verdict was never really in doubt.

I think most politicians believe they are honest. Until they get caught

Politicians are now careerists, not peers. They hold 2nd jobs, game their expenses for profit & bend to lobbyists. Most have never had a proper job. Often offended by & rude to constituents with different opinions. Represent only themself

Overall I suspect most politicians like most people try to be honest and stick to their values. Although in more recent years there does appear to be more recently who look on being a politician more as a buisness opportunity than an opportunity to help the public. I also suspect the whipping culture sometimes makes it look as though politicians aren't voting as they believe, that's not the fault of politicians it's the fault if the system

They have proved time and time again they are extremely untrustworthy, no matter what party they belong to. You can't trust a politician, ever.

Lol. Aside from maybe Rupert Lowe, I'd trust most politicians as far as I could throw them - about 2-3 feet with my muscle mass. Corruption is the game, with accountability as the goal.
