Can the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) be trusted?

Yes 26%No 74%967 votes cast

The BBC is funded mainly by a £180 annual TV licence fee paid by about 80% of UK households, though 94% of adults use its services monthly. Trust in its news has fallen to 47% in 2026, down from 52% the prior year, amid high-profile editorial controversies and a global decline in news trust to 30% in the UK. A charter review is underway, with the current licence fee model under pressure as payments decline faster than expected and alternatives like a household levy are discussed.

The room delivered a sweeping rejection of the BBC’s credibility, with No winning by nearly three to one. The result was less a measured verdict on individual programmes than a judgement on institutional character: the service was portrayed as captured, partisan and no longer entitled to compulsory public funding.

The floor’s most-respected No voices returned to impartiality and motive. One called it “past the point of return for fairness & even handed reporting”, while another said it had become “nothing more than a propaganda channel now”; beneath the anger was a consistent demand that the BBC report facts rather than steer opinion.

Yes offered a narrower, more conditional defence. Its strongest case argued, “We can hold them to account”, while another urged voters to “sift through the grift” across all media; several conceded editorial reservations but still regarded the BBC as more responsible than billionaire-owned alternatives. The two sides largely talked past each other: No saw repeated controversy as proof that the system had failed, while Yes treated criticism and scrutiny as evidence that accountability remained possible.

That disagreement places the vote inside the wider argument over trust in public institutions and the future of the licence fee. The chamber’s sharpest procedural objection was that the BBC “mark[s] their own homework”, while the pro-BBC reply was that public pressure can still force change; the split was therefore over not only what the broadcaster says, but whether its structures can correct themselves.

The verdict was a loss of confidence in the BBC as an institution, not simply irritation with its journalism.

“Yes. Because we can hold them to account. We are also forced to hold ourselves to account. It will always face scrutiny - as it should be. But my favourite thing about those who complain about mainstream media - most of the time can't hold up the complaint for long - because the complaint is scrutinised too. Learn how to sift through the grift - from all forms of media. I do have an issue ”

“The BBC is nothing more than a propaganda channel now. Gone are the days when journalists were journalists and reported the news, now they try to make people feel a certain way to get their own viewpoint across. Citizen journalists seem to be the only people capable of that these days. The BBC should be defunded and allowed to stand or fail on it's own.”

Past the point of return for fairness & even handed reporting. It’s captured by hard left & Islamic activists, not journalists. Everything it reports on is perversely skewed. A migrant commits a crime - but is described as a ‘Derby’ man. They revelled in Truss ‘crashing the economy’ (when she didn’t) yet when Labour is systematically destroying UK - silence & obfuscation. They hate Trump but fawned over senile Biden who used at least 4/5 body doubles. Institutionally corrupt.

Sadly, the BBC has become so ideologically captured that it’s little more than a propaganda arm for the left. Everything they do is so obviously biased it beggars belief that they get away with it. Hand you everything heard Zack Polanski be introduced as “far left” no, but they can’t mention Reform without calling them “far right” and they’re literally centrists!

Absolutely not. They don't understand investigative journalism because they aren't even curious about the truth.

Another relic from past. Still thinks it's World respected, it's not even respected in this country. Make it stand on own and scrap tv tax ,if its as good as it thinks it will survive.

I could repeat here similar thigs I wrote about Church of England earlier today: similar disease pretty much all British institutions are suffering. It was taken and ruled by Lefty, woke activists. Presents opinions instead of news, destroys own brands (Dr Who), spoon feeding politics even in impossible to relate broadcasts (sports, Proms or comedy). Quality is dropping while DEI is in charge. Time to drop the licence fee and sell to highest bidder.

BBC should report absolute facts from all spheres and not enforce opinions on us. It’s the commentary and obvious exclusion of certain things that don’t fit their narrative that is the problem,

The BBC has been ridiculously biased for very many years now. There is no question about it. With that in mind the licence should go.

The BBC has recently been caught in multiple scandals some still ongoing and we seem to just lurch from one to the next. It’s now not a matter of whether there will be another one but rather when the next one will be exposed. They’ve demonstrated they can no longer be impartial but rather they are agenda driven despite multiple apologies and promises to reform, it seems they’re just humouring us and carrying on regardless. It is time the license fee was scrapped.
