Would Andy Burnham be a worse Prime Minister than Keir Starmer?

A four-point margin out of 52 votes is as close to a coin-toss as this platform gets, and the verdict itself is a curious one: on balance, voters here judged Burnham the likelier downgrade on Starmer, not the upgrade Labour's internal critics imagine. That is a genuinely split verdict, not a rout, and it leaves the "change candidate" argument looking shakier than Westminster gossip suggests.

The real fracture was gender, not age. Men voted 19-10 that Burnham would be worse, essentially two-to-one; women voted 10-7 the other way, tilting toward "no", he wouldn't be worse. That gap, roughly 25 points apart in yes share, did more to decide the national tally than any generational divide.

Age, by contrast, barely moved the needle among the groups with real numbers: 16-24 and 25-34 both landed close to 50-50, the two biggest cohorts effectively cancelling each other out and leaving the small pockets of 35-44 and the older brackets to nudge the overall figure, though those groups are too thin to read much into. It echoes a familiar pattern in Labour's post-2016 coalition problem, a party trying to hold together voters who disagree not by generation but by instinct on continuity versus disruption.

For a contest framed as generational churn versus continuity, it was men and women, not young and old, who couldn't agree.
