Does the Berlin Pride attacker's background prove inconsistency in progressive values?

What stands out here is not the 62 per cent verdict but who argued it best. The floor's top-rated opinion overall, at +2, came from a No voter conceding real tensions between "radical Islam" and "western values" before insisting it is "not possible to extrapolate every Muslim's lived values from one nutter in a car" — a line more careful than almost anything on the winning side, and still No lost by 24 points.

Yes voters, who carried the vote, mostly argued by inference rather than rebuttal: that the attack was "consistent with Islamist teaching, although progressives shut their eyes and ears to that," and, in the debate's most-elaborated Yes thread, that a disproportionate share of Britain's proscribed terror organisations are "of Islamic (Islamist/jihadist) heritage" relative to the Muslim population share — a statistical case for pattern over exception, refined across replies into a call for "more scrutiny and control" of specific Islamist bodies rather than a blanket claim.

No voters pushed back on the leap from individual to category, one warning bluntly that this "should not be used to push a right wing agenda," and challenging Yes directly with an analogy — "should we then ban straight white cis men as they're the most likely group to commit sexual violence" — that went largely unanswered except by clarification that the target was "islamists and not muslim." The two sides argued past each other more than against one another: one making a statistical and doctrinal case, the other a moral one about collective blame.

The result lands squarely on Europe's long-running fault line over Islamist violence, multiculturalism and the language of "progressive values" since 7/7, Cologne and the Charlie Hebdo years — familiar terrain rehearsed again here in miniature.

That the highest-respected argument in the room was the most hedged, and still the losing side, is itself the finding: this chamber wanted the harder conclusion more than it wanted the careful one.
