Does the Berlin Pride attacker's background prove inconsistency in progressive values?

On 25 July 2026 a van was driven into crowds at Berlin's Christopher Street Day Pride event in Tiergarten, killing one woman and injuring 29 others. Authorities classified the attack as Islamist terrorism. The suspect, 21-year-old German citizen Abdul Ballout of Lebanese background, had prior extremism links including an attempt to join ISIS in 2025 and a recent suspended sentence. He was shot dead by police the next day while resisting arrest.
