Should the JCPOA have been maintained instead of the ongoing war?

Yes 63%No 37%95 votes cast

The JCPOA, signed in 2015, limited Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. The US withdrew in 2018 under President Trump, after which Iran resumed and expanded uranium enrichment. Recent direct conflict between Israel, the US and Iran has resulted in a fragile memorandum of understanding, with critics linking the deal's collapse to heightened regional tensions and war.

Nearly two to one, the chamber concluded that the 2015 nuclear deal should have been nursed along rather than left to collapse into the confrontation that followed, a verdict that reads less as nostalgia for Obama-era diplomacy than as a rebuke of what replaced it. Yes carried every generation but one.

That exception matters more than the topline. Voters in their late thirties and early forties — old enough to remember the JCPOA's signing and the decade of Middle East wars either side of it — broke decisively against the proposition, while the 55-64s and the over-65s, who lived through the Iran hostage crisis and decades of sanctions-first policy, were the most convinced that the deal should have survived. It suggests a split not between hawks and doves but between those who trust containment through diplomacy and those who have watched such deals unravel too often to believe in them. Gender told its own quieter story: men leaned firmly toward the deal's defenders, while women were split exactly down the middle, unwilling to hand either side a clean mandate.

The result lands squarely on the fault line opened by Trump's 2018 withdrawal — a decision critics have long argued set the region on the path to the war whose fragile aftermath this vote now judges. Whether that judgment reflects settled opinion or simply relief that the fighting has paused is, as ever with these things, the harder question left unanswered.

Yes, Obama had a good deal. Trump ended it because he feels inferior to Obama.
