Are net zero policies the main cause for the recent energy price cap?
Ofgem announced on 26 August 2026 that the energy price cap will rise 4% from 1 October to £1,723 a year for a typical household, driven by an 11% increase in wholesale costs from the Middle East conflict and volatile global gas markets. Policy costs linked to environmental schemes fell sharply in April 2026 after government moves to fund some renewables support from general taxation rather than bills. Net zero measures contribute to some ongoing costs such as Contracts for Difference and network upgrades but are not cited by Ofgem as the primary factor in the latest cap increase.

The bills are going up for one reason and one reason only. Corporate greed.
Renewables produce so much energy now we can't store it and we have to turn some off. The same pirates controlling oil & gas powered power stations also control the renewables. The problem is naked greed & blatant profiteering
The issue here is not net zero or green energy, but how our energy is priced. Green energy is cheaper to produce and creates jobs, but we cannot currently benefit from the price differential because electricity price is pegged to the cost of fossil fuels. Moreover, it is better and cheaper for us to invest in research and development now rather than later. Other countries can buy our technology, generating more income.
The costs of Net Zero " fell" in April 26 because they were moved from bills to taxation. So they didn't "fall" - they just moved to a different heading, but we the taxpayers are still the ones paying for it. Sleight of hand.
All the additional costs on electric bills is for "green" energy support and infrastructure. Actual costs of electric without extra costs are i understand very competitive with others countries.
The main cause is the Iran war causing the price of energy to surge. However, net zero policies do share responsibility too. Especially the recent anticyclones where there’s no wind to generate power and the solar panels don’t work efficiently in a heatwave.
It is somewhat sad to read responses such as that from BenL. It repeats Milibrand's propaganda without any knowledge of the facts. The heads of electricity generators acknowledged that if gas dropped to zero it would have no impact on electricity prices. 65% of industrial energy costs are incentives for renewables by the government's statement for Energy Intensive Industries. And the cost will only grow from here.
Net Zero policies are not helping and are contributing, but they are far from the only reason. Greedy energy companies who continue to post ever increasing profits, with profit margins way above some of their counterparts in countries such as Spain and Germany are a major part of the problem.
If alleged that there is a Global ‘problem’, it’s a scam. If that ‘problem’ can only be fixed by ‘Global’ action it’s a scam. If ‘science’ cannot be questioned it’s a scam. The AGW hoax has been a Psyop for decades corrupting our children’s minds & like the COVID-19 scam we are invited to accept complete nonsense cheered on by the usual suspects. Sustainable energy such as wind farms receive subsidies for not producing power when the grid cannot cope with the additional input, this pushes the price for consumers up as someone has to pay for it and they are not able to cope at peak times. If we were able to still produce our own gas / electricity instead of shutting these facilities down in the name of net zero we would not be reliant on very expensive imports , which have risen in price due to various conflicts
