Is Nigel Farage right to call the masked anti-migrant protest at Dover disgusting?

Yes 53%No 47%611 votes cast

Hundreds of masked men in black blocked roads around the Port of Dover on 5 September 2026 in a 'stop the boats' protest, causing major traffic disruption for several hours. Nigel Farage condemned the balaclava-clad demonstration as disgusting and wrong at every level, arguing no one should protest while masked. The action, linked to the Patriot Platform and supported by Tommy Robinson, drew widespread criticism for being intimidatory.

Farage’s rare moment of agreement with his critics was the story here: a narrow Yes vote assembled from people who plainly did not want to reward him. One voter called it the “Only time I have ever agreed with Farage”, capturing the room’s reluctant, almost embarrassed consensus.

The strongest Yes argument was not about immigration policy but conduct: masked men, black clothing and a blocked port looked intimidating, while disruption punished people with no say in the protest. The floor’s most-respected Yes case said it was “pure intimidation” and added, “You can't rightly slate groups like Just Stop Oil for blocking roads.”

No voters did not dispute the disruption so much as reject Farage’s moral vocabulary and accuse him of double standards. The most-respected No case stressed that “if Palestinian or other causes wear masks the authorities do nothing”, while another insisted: “It was peaceful. People have a right to protest.”

That left the two sides arguing past each other over what should count as the central wrong: intimidation and anonymity for Yes voters, selective policing and the suppression of unpopular protest for No voters. A more guarded No voice put the distinction bluntly: “A mask in that climate is not automatically disgusting.”

The wider argument was about consistency in public life: whether face coverings, road blockades and police tolerance can be judged by the cause behind them. The result was therefore less an endorsement of Farage than a rebuke delivered by voters who still thought his language, and the protest itself, had crossed a line.

“Hate to say it but on this he's spot on. If you believe in your cause, have the bottle to show your face... marching around in balaclavas and black fatigues is pure intimidation. Blocking Britain's busiest port doesn't stop a single boat in the Channel, it just punishes ordinary lorry drivers and local folk trying to get to work. You can't rightly slate groups like Just Stop Oil for blocking roads”

“It’s well known that if Palestinian or other causes wear masks the authorities do nothing. With a two tier approach embedded in our criminal justice system, anyone protesting against illegal migration is well advised to disguise their identity or they will face the full force of public condemnation including job loss. It’s disingenuous to pretend otherwise.”

Seems to me they are turning the ER/ JSO/ProPal/ BLM rule back back at them. Police showed respect for these demonstrations , their ‘ lack of violence’ and never unglued hands or moved people off roads…

Calling it disgusting is wrong. It was peaceful. People have a right to protest. However, there is a lot of hypocrisy on both sides. You can't complain about Just Stop Oil or masked Pro-Palestine protests disrupting traffic and condone this. Similarly mainstream media and those on the left can't condemn these protests while failing to condemn others. Peaceful protest is one thing, it should not disrupt ordinary people's lives. It ends up being counter-productive.

He really doesn’t seem to like his voter base much does he! No matter, all the better for Restore, who will actually do something about the horrendous damage caused by the Uniparty.

I hate passionately to agree with Farage, but he’s right: masked mobs blocking Dover is pure intimidation. What’s funny is him acting shocked — these are the same balaclava‑brigade politics he’s spent years stoking. Calling it disgusting is the bare minimum. If your supporters need masks, maybe ask why they’re ashamed of being seen.

I think Reform has always been a replacement UniParty. Farage is trying to show Statesman qualities but ignores the flagrant disregard of civilised behaviour by these immigrant invaders. Of course import very low IQ products of centuries of incest and it’s not difficult to predict that goat herders will not be Drs. Citizens are fed up. He should focus on 2 tier policing & the army of violent young me that are being specifically imported by our Communist government.

No, we should condemn, in the first place, unlawful actions. As far as I am concern the anti-immigration "stop the boats" demonstration caught authorities off guard, Kent Police did not implement Crime and Policing Act 2026 powers regarding face covering in time. "Major traffic disruption" is something else: under the Highways Act 1980, it is a criminal offence to obstruct free passage along any public road without a lawful authority or excuse.
