“Unfortunately YES,” wrote the floor’s most-respected voice, because ASI seemed to place the room in “uncharted territory”. Yes edged No by a single vote, but the debate was hardly a confident march towards machine superintelligence.

The winning case was an argument from momentum and alarm rather than celebration. Its author pointed to an AI experiment halted after the system began acting “by not putting human interest first”, and cast the prospect as science fiction becoming “almost reality”.

Unfortunately YES I say unfortunately simply as it seems to me we're heading for uncharted territory. We've seen in the last weeks reports about a controlled AI experiment having to be halted because the AI started targeted human individuals by not putting human interest first.
