Should Andy Burnham call an immediate general election?
Andy Burnham became Prime Minister on 20 July 2026 after winning the Labour leadership election and succeeding Keir Starmer, who resigned last month. Public and political calls for an immediate election have intensified, with critics arguing he lacks a personal mandate from voters.

No new PM has called an election simply because he/she has been promoted to the job of PM. It's more important to call a bi-election if an MP changes party simply because he's changing the ideals & beliefs he was elected to uphold. In the UK we vote for parties not personalities. If an MP gets promoted to PM he/she is still representing the party he was elected to represent. When an MP changes party, he/she no longer represents the party they was elected to represent
Just seen his cabinet (Rayner? Advisers anll seem hardline left) and heard his plans. This makes his position out of line with promises made to the electorate so there should be a vote. Millibrain as FSec should be amusing tho- especially when he has to meet Trump.
