Should Andy Burnham recall Parliament to exempt serious offenders from early release?
Andy Burnham has paused a scheme under the Sentencing Act that would allow around 6,000 offenders to be released after serving one third of their sentence instead of half, in order to ease prison overcrowding. Reports suggest killers, rapists and sex offenders could be among those released on 2 September. The Conservatives have called on Burnham to revoke the legislation and recall Parliament from summer recess if necessary to exempt the most serious violent and sexual offenders.
