Should police always reveal a suspect’s nationality and ethnicity when they announce a charge?
Police are not required to reveal a suspect's nationality or ethnicity when announcing a charge. Since interim national guidance in August 2025, forces are encouraged to confirm both, where known or recorded, in high-profile or sensitive cases, but each force decides. The guidance followed the 2024 Southport disorder and accusations of a cover-up. It also says police do not verify immigration status. Official statistics already give some ethnicity breakdowns, for example of arrests, but the ONS says it holds no nationality data on homicide suspects.

No. It's not always going to be relevant. But full correct details must be recorded. And they shouldn't be allowed to gaslight the public and deceive them either. With statements referring to someone as a "a local British man" when they know full well they have immigrated here, or trying to kid on that someone who has just butchered some school girls is a Welsh choirboy, when it is totally untrue. All in the name of community cohesion.
No, we just need every single illegal immigrant gone. Then there will be no need. Also when the police tell us not to speculate, they don't need to tell us the ethnicity, we already know.
Why though? Is there any point? Every time, without fail, that the police mention nationality or ethnicity it starts yet another witch hunt for entire groups and ignoring that there are bad actors in every group, nationality, ethnicity, religion, etc etc.
Nationality, ethnicity, biological sex, etc. are all relevant data that should always be released.
Why is it necessary to divulge this information? It just stirs up more hatred in the world.
No, I do not believe it is necessary. What police should collect to statistics is nationality, ethnicity, religion etc.
