Should the government bring all remaining train companies into public ownership?

The government is transferring remaining private train operators to public ownership under Great British Railways as their contracts expire. Chiltern Railways joined in September 2026 with Great Western Railway due in December 2026 followed by others through 2027. This follows earlier transfers including Govia Thameslink Railway in May 2026 and aims to integrate track and train operations for reliability and efficiency.

Privatisation was a mistake, we must all admit it, there is no enforceable antitrust on the necessary monopoly of the rail network, ergo it should be a public burden monopoly and be run at cost or below profit for the public weal rather than a for profit model that enriches a small few and causes pressure on rules and standards with figures massaged and services dropped rather than delayed. There is no reason a divisional national company can't achieve necessary service.
