Should union political funds be donated to parties in proportion to members’ stated voting intentions?
UK trade unions with political funds must ballot members to establish them and allow opt-outs from contributions. Recent legislation effective 2026 automatically opts new members in unless they opt out. Unions have historically directed the vast majority of donations to Labour, which received millions in 2024-2026. Polls in 2026 show union member support now split, with Labour and Reform UK both at around 28% and Greens at 12%, amid declining Labour support since 2024.

Does Labour truly defend the interests of the working class? It is not that simple any more. A change liken this could make unions actually accoutnablle to their members!
This sounds really interesting. We should never presume one party represent the interests of working people.
I considered this for a long time and finally reasoned that Labour should not automatically receive the 'bulwark of the proletariat' bonanza where, in New Labour's case, it simply isn't the case anymore. While I genuinely worry about monies directed to Reform UK as it exists, the working class nominally voting for 'reform' should be their prerogative and mandate, equally their support of green issues. If Labour want their pot, they should demonstrate they've earned it or lose
No, union should not donate to any parties, especially just to one of them. All donations should be scrabbed TBH to make playing field of ideas even.
