Should the PIP system be tightened to prevent awards for conditions with limited impact on daily life?
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) supports adults with extra costs from disabilities or long-term health conditions affecting daily living or mobility. New claim award rates fell to around 35% in early 2026 from 43% the previous year, with over 4 million people currently receiving it including large numbers for anxiety and other mental health issues. Critics argue the system has become too lenient with rising claims especially among younger people while supporters say assessments remain strict and focus on functional impact rather than the condition.
