Should the UK invest £62m to build domestic space capabilities instead of leasing them?

If there's a fault line, it's a mild one of age rather than ideology — the middle-aged, in their late forties and fifties, were the most convinced of all, while the youngest cohort was the most divided, still backing the spend but with the largest minority holding out. That reads less as generational politics than as a gap between those weighing long-term national capability and those more sceptical of any state outlay right now.

The vote sits squarely in the familiar British argument over public money: build sovereign capacity now at cost, or rent flexibility from allies and save the upfront bill, the same tension that runs through debates on defence procurement, energy and industrial strategy more broadly. Here, voters leaned toward ownership.

The floor's brief exchange captured that trade-off neatly. The top Yes voice reduced the case to something almost domestic — "if this means my satellite tv keeps working, sure" — while the most-respected No voice pushed back on scale and priorities, warning it "won't be done for 20 years" and noting the sum "would also pay virtually all our MP's salaries for a year."

For a spending question this uncontentious across demographics, the real debate wasn't who's for it — it was whether £62m buys ambition or just delay.
