Should the UK replace FPTP with any form of proportional representation?
The UK uses First Past the Post for general elections, where the candidate with the most votes in each constituency wins the seat. In the 2024 election, Labour secured a large majority with around 34% of the vote. Proportional representation systems allocate seats more closely to parties' national vote shares and are used in many European countries as well as for some UK devolved and European elections. Campaigners continue to push for reform citing wasted votes and unrepresentative outcomes while critics highlight risks to stable single-party governments.
