Should there be a bank holiday if England win the world cup?

Yes 57%No 43%126 votes cast

England are competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with strong momentum towards the knockout stages. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated he is preparing to declare an additional bank holiday in England if the team wins the tournament for the first time since 1966. A YouGov poll shows 54% of people in England support the idea while support is lower in Scotland and Wales.

Only in a country that has waited sixty years for another men's World Cup could the prospect of an extra day off still divide opinion, but divide it did, with Yes prevailing by a workable if not overwhelming fourteen points. The instinct here was less about football than about who trusts a windfall holiday to be worth the disruption.

The clearest fault line ran through age and gender rather than fandom: the youngest voters backed the idea almost to a person, while the over-65s were the one group to tip into No, and women split noticeably cooler on the idea than men. That reads less as apathy about England's chances than as a generational and gendered scepticism about whether the country can afford, or organise, a spontaneous public holiday — the young wanting the party, their elders and more women weighing the hassle.

It is a small, self-selected echo of a bigger British argument about whether feel-good gestures from Downing Street are generous statecraft or performative cost, the same tension that shadows debates over public spending and business burden whenever a government reaches for a symbolic gift to the nation.

That tension showed up directly in the arguments the chamber itself elevated: the top Yes voice wanted to go further still, arguing "the bank holiday should last a full week", while the leading No voice was blunt about the price tag, warning it "costs too much to our businesses."

England may or may not lift the trophy, but on this evidence the country is already arguing about the party before the final whistle has blown.
