Has Shabana Mahmood lost her mind?

A clear win for Yes, 36 votes to 25, the kind of majority that settles an argument without making it a rout. Nearly six in ten voters here concluded the Home Secretary's positioning has become incoherent enough to merit the question's blunt framing.

The generational pattern is the most telling feature: the youngest cohort, 16-24, went 4-1 for Yes, and 25-34s followed at 60%, while the only age group to break decisively the other way was the over-65s, 2 yes to 3 no. That is a reversal of the usual asylum-and-immigration script, where older voters tend to be the sceptics of Home Office liberalism and younger ones more sympathetic to it — here it is the young rushing to judge her harshest.

Gender adds a further wrinkle: women voted Yes at 75% (6 of 8), well ahead of men's 54%, though the female sample is thin enough to read as a signal rather than a verdict in itself. Put together, the split suggests unease with Mahmood cuts across the usual immigration-politics lines, drawing frustration from voters who might otherwise sit on opposite sides of the Rwanda-and-ECHR debate.

For a minister installed only in September, a majority verdict this early that she has "lost her mind" is a rough marker for the government's mid-parliament reshuffle logic.
