Should GPs in England take collective action against the 2026/27 contract?

Yes 41%No 59%56 votes cast

The BMA reports that 99% of around 17,000 GP members voted to reject changes to the 2026/27 GMS contract. GPC England is prioritising negotiations on mandated advice and guidance plus excessive workload from online patient requests. Since May 2025 the BMA has urged practices to take monthly collective actions including limiting data sharing, altering prescribing software use, and declining new shared care invitations without local agreements.

The contrast is the story. GPs themselves voted almost as one to reject the 2026/27 contract, but among the broader chamber weighing whether doctors should escalate into collective action, the answer came back no by a comfortable margin — a reminder that professional solidarity and public sympathy for strike-adjacent tactics are not the same currency.

The age pattern sharpens that gap. Younger voters, in their twenties and early thirties, backed action by a wide margin, while the 45-54 bracket turned against it almost to a person — a divide that reads less as generational militancy than as those closer to running practices, or managing them, worrying about what "limiting data sharing" and "declining shared care" actually do to patients on the ground.

It sits squarely in the long-running argument over NHS industrial action — from junior doctors' strikes to consultants' pay disputes — where the public's instinct has often been more equivocal than professional bodies' near-unanimous ballots suggest. Doctors may feel embattled by the contract; the country, on this evidence, is not yet ready to cheer them into a fight.

The 99% inside the BMA and the 41% here are, in their way, the same story told from opposite ends of the stethoscope.
