Should Ed Miliband be removed as Foreign Secretary for meeting the Iranian commissioner?

Ed Miliband has served as Foreign Secretary since July 2026 under Prime Minister Andy Burnham. In September 2026 he met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the UN General Assembly, where he warned against hostile Iranian activity on UK soil while discussing the Middle East war and the Strait of Hormuz. The UK also imposed sanctions on Israeli West Bank settlements that month, which drew Iranian praise and domestic criticism from opposition figures.

No... not simply for meeting him. A Foreign Secretary sometimes has to sit across the table from hostile regimes; that's diplomacy. Judge Miliband on what he actually demanded, conceded and achieved. Iran-linked threats on British soil, detained British citizens and wider Iranian hostility require consequences, not photo opportunities and stern words. If his diplomacy produces nothing while threats continue, hold him accountable for that failure.

Having had a modicum of experience in this field some years ago the purpose of the role is definitely not to apply your personal opinions but to ensure UK plc is best placed to function in a global capacity. Miliband has no idea what he’s doing but he’s not the first or last.

It’s concerning that this nonsense - complete with hint at an antisemitic conspiracy - comes from the refnation team itself.

Ed Milliband should be no where near ir associated with government ideas, manifest, or policy, mr milliband does not have a clue about the needs, wants and future if this nations population, he oanders to influences which align with his frankly strange and wierd personality. Milliband has no place in policy, government, or societal values, he is a very real dangerous and corrupt part of our establishment, unfortunately.

What on earth do people think a Foreign Secretary does?! I'd be far more concerned If he refused to talk to them, because the whole point of foreign diplomacy is talking to adversaries? Refusing dialogue isn't a show of strength, all it does is show we're blind to what's actually happening

He is the foreign secretary and as such he is best placed to communicate with representatives of the Iranian government. The west needs to maintain diplomatic channels however fragile and especially now when USA and Israel are being belligerent and acting against our national interest.
