Does the Right ownership majority control of Newspapers and media influence British politics too much?

Yes 61%No 39%182 votes cast

Three companies control around 90% of UK national newspaper circulation, with many titles holding right-leaning editorial positions that frequently criticise the current Labour government. This concentration has increased since 2014 while broadcast rules enforce impartiality on TV and radio. Recent events including the downfall of Keir Starmer have been linked by analysts to sustained negative coverage from billionaire-owned outlets and amplification on social media platforms.

The chamber split not by left and right so much as by life stage, and the shape of that split is the story: voters under 35 and over 65 backed the case that right-leaning ownership distorts politics by wide margins, while the 35-64 cohort, and the 55-64s in particular, were essentially divided down the middle. That U-curve suggests two different grievances rather than one movement — younger voters wary of billionaire proprietors shaping the terms of debate, older voters perhaps remembering earlier press wars, with those in between least persuaded that ownership concentration is the decisive force in British politics.

Men and women lined up in broadly similar proportions, which tells you this was not a gendered argument but one about institutions and power — echoing a long-running fault line in British public life, from Leveson to the debate over BBC impartiality, about who gets to referee political coverage when broadcast rules constrain the airwaves but newspapers and their online reach remain unregulated.

What swayed the floor was less a debate about ownership structures than a proxy argument about the BBC itself. The top Yes voice dismissed claims of broadcast bias with a two-word rejoinder, "Laura Kuenssberg", while the most-respected No voice countered that with the BBC "controlled by the Left", the answer was "more right-leaning media, not less."

A chamber that agreed the press matters enormously, and disagreed almost entirely about which side of it to fear.

With the BBC being controlled by the Left, and with right-leaning opinions resulting in longer prison sentences than child-abuse, I think we could use more right-leaning media, not less. The truth will out.
