Is the government misleading the public on asylum seeker accommodation when it says hotel numbers have halved?
Home Office data released in August 2026 shows 16,021 asylum seekers in hotels at the end of June 2026, half the 32,041 figure from June 2025 and well below the 2023 peak of 56,000. The number of hotels in use has fallen to under 160 from around 400 at the 2023 peak. The current government is closing more hotels and moving people into dispersal housing, former military sites and houses of multiple occupation while accelerating decisions and returns.

No, they misleading public by not answering the basic questions: how big is total and per capita cost of accommodation for asylum seekers and asylum granted.
Yes, the number of asylum seekers in HOTELS have reduced. But putting them in less public former military sites or overcrowded HMOs isn't reducing the number. Real progress means clearing the processing backlog and making swift, fair decisions
