The Southampton case became the referendum’s emotional hinge: a story of a dying white teenager allegedly treated as a suspect while a racism claim took precedence. In this self-selected online vote, the decisive mood was that such an episode could not be dismissed as mere administrative failure.
The winning case fused that incident with a broader charge against protest policing, anti-racism guidance and institutional caution. The floor’s most-respected Yes voice demanded “One law. Evidence first. Not a narrative”, while another said the police had become “captured by DEI policy” — a case built less on arrest statistics than on who gets believed first.
No voters did not all defend the police’s conduct. Their sharpest objection was to the leap from a grave incident to racial conspiracy: “What happened to Henry Nowak was sickening incompetence,” one argued, but calling it hatred of white people was “pure populist poison.” Another drew the room towards class, saying bias against white people applied only “unless they were poor and working class”; the two sides were often answering different questions, one about differential treatment and the other about the historical distribution of police power.
The more measured No voices described a force frightened of accusations of racism, producing “a double standard” rather than an anti-white policy. Alongside the louder culture-war claims, a quieter Yes thread argued that “Policing strategy is dictated by postcode”, bringing class, neighbourhood and institutional trust into a debate otherwise framed around race and ideology.
The result was a clear mandate for the charge of two-tier policing, but not a settled account of what causes it: prejudice, overcorrection, political pressure or simple incompetence. The room agreed on unequal treatment; it did not agree on the mechanism.

The police only come out in riot gear for 'right wing' protests and marches yet they tell Muslim protesters to stash their weapons in the mosque. They let ProPal or Just Stop Oil marches go on and stand by, but arrest people for 'being visibly Jewish'. They ask permission to enter mosques but arrest protesters for saying 'we love bacon'. It couldn't be more obvious.

Yes, well at least it’s perceived that way. There appears to be a certain level of enthusiasm toward tackling white crime. But when people of colour are involved there appears to be a level of hesitancy and blind eying of the crime.
