Should local authorities be granted more power to implement regional laws without Westminster approval?

The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act 2026 gives strategic authorities and mayors a general power of competence over transport, housing, skills, planning and economic development. Recent changes allow mayors to call in major planning decisions and retain more local tax revenue from 2027. Local government remains subordinate to parliamentary sovereignty with no constitutional protection, so Westminster can override or amend these powers.

Local councils know their areas better so they should have more freedom to make decisions locally, however there still needs to be national rules.
