Nothing about this vote reads like consensus. A government roadmap meant to give farmers clarity over the coming decades scraped through here by ten points, and the coalition behind it looks generational rather than universal: the 25-34s and 45-54s backed it solidly, while every over-65 voter who took part said no.
The gender gap is just as telling. Men backed the roadmap by a comfortable margin, women split against it, and the 55-64 bracket landed on an exact tie — five each — a reminder that "England's farming future" doesn't read the same to everyone asked to sign off on it.
It's the familiar shape of a long-horizon policy question: those closer to working age, more likely to be shaping or inheriting the sector's next thirty years, lean towards backing a plan; those furthest from that timeline are least persuaded a roadmap document changes anything on the ground. It echoes the broader net-zero and rural-policy debates, where the promise of "clarity" competes with scepticism that Whitehall roadmaps translate into results for the people actually running farms.
A yes vote, but not one farmers of every generation would recognise as their own.
