Should the government spend £3.85bn a year on average to adapt to extreme heat?
Verdant think tank estimates that heatwaves will cause at least £25bn in UK productivity losses by 2030 if no action is taken. The June 2026 heatwave alone cost £2.4bn in lost output. The Committee on Climate Change recommends average annual spending of £3.85bn on adaptation measures including air conditioning in public buildings.
