Should the UK government take difficult decisions to speed up renewable energy projects and hit zero-carbon electricity by 2030?

Labour has approved new renewable energy projects at double the rate of the previous Conservative government. The UK has promised a virtually zero-carbon electricity system by 2030 but turning approvals into operational power remains slow. The head of the National Energy System Operator has said the target is at the outer limit of what is achievable if difficult decisions are taken early.

The chamber rejected the push for a 2030 zero-carbon grid, 26 votes to 17, a clear but not overwhelming verdict on Labour's flagship energy pledge. With 40% backing the "difficult decisions" framing, this reads less as outright hostility to renewables than scepticism about the timetable and the trade-offs implied by rushing it.

The generational pattern is the story here. The 55-64 bracket was the only age group to back acceleration decisively, 5 of 8 in favour, while every other cohort from 25 to 65-plus tilted against, with 45-54s (1 of 5) and 65+ (1 of 4) most sceptical. That inverts the usual climate-politics assumption that older voters are the brakes and younger ones the accelerator: here it is the pre-retirement group most willing to back hard choices, while everyone else, including the youngest votes cast, held back.

That pattern echoes the wider net zero debate as it has curdled since 2019, where enthusiasm for the destination has increasingly detached from appetite for the cost and disruption of getting there fast, be it planning reform, grid infrastructure or bill impacts. Men were somewhat more willing to back the 2030 push than women (41% versus 33%), though the female sample here is too thin to lean on.

The government's "outer limit of achievable" framing may have been meant to signal ambition, but on this evidence it read to many as a warning.

Obviously there needs to be research and planning. but if SMRs and similar deployments are fast tracked with less bureaucracy, that may cut a bulk of cost and give desired reliability.

Nuclear must also be part of this strategy, but it's clear considering our nations natural resources, it would be idiotic not to utilise these renewable sources of energy. Love to hear the argument on how tidal energy sometimes doesn't work
