Should the UK introduce six weeks of well-paid paternity leave for fathers?
University of Bath research cited in a Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology briefing found that Shared Parental Leave introduced in 2015 has not increased fathers' take-up on average. The same research shows that six weeks of paternity leave paid at 90% of earnings could deliver net social benefits of up to £12.8 billion a year, with a separate paternity allowance for self-employed fathers generating nearly £3 billion annually in benefits. The briefing also notes that nursery fees have risen fastest in areas with the lowest government childcare funding.
