Should the UK create a climate security taskforce?

Yes 54%No 46%13 votes cast

The UK government has appointed military, security and academic experts to a new taskforce. Its role is to advise policymakers on how climate change and nature loss could affect UK security, supply chains and stability. The 2025 National Security Strategy already lists climate and nature as drivers of security risk.

Thirteen votes, seven yes, six no: a margin so thin it barely counts as a verdict, more a snapshot of a question still finding its coalition. Yes crossed the line, but only just, and nothing here suggests a settled national mood on folding climate risk into the security brief.

The real story is who was propping up each side. Men split heavily for the taskforce, 5 of 7, while the small female cohort went the other way entirely, both women voting no. The 25-34s carried yes on numbers alone (4 of 6), but the 55-64 bracket was a clean sweep against, the one age group here fully agreed.

That pattern echoes the wider fight over whether "security" should stretch to cover climate and nature loss at all, a debate that runs parallel to the net zero consensus fraying at Westminster and in newsrooms alike. Younger, male-leaning yes voters reading climate as a hard-power issue; older and female voters here unconvinced it belongs in the same bracket as troops and borders.

A win, technically, but the kind that changes nothing about the argument underneath it.
