Should all new cars be required to have a built-in dash cam?

No law requires a dash cam in any UK car, and they are legal to fit if they do not obstruct the driver's view. Roughly half of UK motorists are estimated to use one, and police forces accept footage through portals such as the National Dash Cam Safety Portal. New cars are being required to carry event data recorders, or black boxes, which log crash data but not video. The government has announced plans to bring these in across Great Britain under a phased timetable.

Depends on what is recorded and how the data is accessed. Can’t hell but to get the impression that people who do not drive or are not particularly good drivers are more likely to reject this.

Brilliant idea, particularly if the vehicle is used in cities. That's not me saying it wouldn't be useful on all roads. I feel it would speed up insurance claims, catch those who fake accidents, also stop a lot of head scratching trying to figure out what happened. Then of course there are some who find putting in a dash cam, fiddly and don't fix it in. Really like this idea, a good protection for motorists.

More and more state surveillance, No thank you. It should be a personal choice, insurance breaks might incentivise it, but it should be able to be switched off if you want it switched off. Would you be fined, get points on your license if pulled over and your mandatory dash cam found not to be working. Who controls the data and who has access to it if it becomes mandated by the state. As with anything, consider who may one day have the power and control over it.

No. I'm tired of constant surveillance. Some horror company like Palantir would end up having access to the sound and footage.

Will mean we don't have to buy one additionally. I'd be happy with that. It also brings car insurance down as you can use the footage to prove innocence or guilt.

Unfortunately there are too many scammers and unlicensed drivers on the road. In this day and age we need every tool possible to protect ourselves from the criminals. Too often we hear about cars stopping for no reason in the hope the car behind will hit them. Then the ones who fake an accident. Then the unlicensed and illegally licensed drivers are another risk we have to cope with.

Govt mandated recording devices in every vehicle? Whatever will we think of next to impact the privacy of the general population. Let people choose

It should be a user choice issue.

Stop with the nanny state, and mandatory this or that. Give people freedom and they will choose the solutions benefiting them. Increasing number of laws will make products more expensive.
