Should junk food advertising be banned before 9pm?
Childhood obesity rates in the UK remain high, with over a third of children leaving primary school overweight or obese, driving long-term health costs estimated at billions annually. The government introduced a 9pm watershed on pre-watershed TV advertising of foods high in fat, sugar and salt in 2025, but a July 2026 Commons health committee report urges further measures including bans on junk food billboards, public transport ads, and outlets near schools.
