Should the government continue its early prisoner release scheme?

Yes 29%No 71%79 votes cast

The UK government is releasing some prisoners earlier than their full sentence to ease the prisons crisis. Victims and survivors often learn of these releases with little or no notice unless enrolled in the victim contact scheme. Supporters argue it allows community supervision and corrects inflated sentence lengths while opponents say it harms victims' sense of safety.

Britain's oldest voters turned out to be the readiest to back early release, splitting almost evenly on a question that everyone else answered with a clear no — a reversal of the usual law-and-order script, in which age hardens attitudes rather than softens them. That the 55-64s, by contrast, delivered the most emphatic rejection in the chamber suggests something closer to lived anxiety about crime and safety than ideology, an instinct sharpened rather than dulled by proximity to retirement and, perhaps, to victimhood.

Gender told a similarly stark story: women rejected the scheme more decisively than men, who at least came close to an even split. That gap tracks a familiar pattern in criminal justice debates, where women consistently register lower tolerance for measures perceived to trade victims' security for prison capacity — the coalition here looks less "left versus right" than "risk-averse versus pragmatic".

The result sits squarely inside the argument that has dogged the government since the policy's introduction — that easing a genuine prisons crisis cannot be separated, in the public mind, from the fear of victims left uninformed and unprotected. Voters here were not weighing sentencing philosophy in the abstract; they were weighing whose safety gets sacrificed first.

A scheme built on operational necessity found little public patience for the trade-off it demands.

Commit a crime, do the time. I'm sure we can resolve some of the crisis via the death penalty and deportations of foreign criminals.
