The most striking thing about this result is how little the winning margin owed to the question actually asked. The chamber split 44 to 54 on whether the SNP should prioritise Westminster seats over Holyrood in the push for independence, yet nobody who voted No — and nobody who voted Yes — left an argument engaging with that strategic choice directly. What the floor debated instead was independence itself.
The No side, which supplied every opinion on the page, ranged from resigned to hostile. The most-respected line was almost a shrug: "Give them independence. Like football team end up getting nowhere." Another voter went further, arguing the SNP's record in office undercuts the whole project — "Independence will kill Scotland... one o the worst in world from one o the best" — while a third set conditions rather than objections: full independence would be fine, but "no handouts, no freebees no nothing... They sink or swim on their own."
The Yes side, holding 45 of every 100 votes, left no opinions at all, a silence made more notable by the fact that the SNP's actual Westminster losses and Holyrood's pro-independence majority are precisely the tension the question was built to probe. Whatever case exists for prioritising one parliament over the other went unmade in public, even as nearly half the chamber backed it at the ballot.
The result sits atop the same fault line that has run through devolution politics since 2014 — Holyrood's mandate against Westminster's reserved powers over the constitution — but the debate here barely touched it, dissolving instead into familiar arguments about whether independence is desirable at all.
A ten-point defeat argued almost entirely on territory the question never asked about.
