Should a new Prime Minister automatically trigger a general election?
The UK Prime Minister can change without a general election when a party selects a new leader during its term, as happened in 2016, 2019 and 2022. The Fixed-term Parliaments Act was repealed in 2022, restoring the monarch's power to dissolve Parliament on the Prime Minister's request. No constitutional requirement currently exists for an immediate election on leadership change.
