Should the UK prioritise R&D funding for its globally recognised universities over others?

Jim O’Neill, a key economic ally of incoming prime minister Andy Burnham, has said the UK’s R&D funding system should back places and institutions with a genuine edge, including supporting globally recognised universities more than others. O’Neill made the comments in a Q&A with UK Research and Innovation. He chairs Northern Gritstone, an investment firm founded by the universities of Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool.
