Will Andy Burnham make for an effective Prime Minister?

Voters here declined to endorse Andy Burnham as Britain's seventh prime minister in a decade, by 31 votes to 24 — a clear if not crushing verdict, decided by a shade over one in five of the chamber's total.

The generational pattern is the story, and it inverts the usual script. The youngest cohort, 16-24, backed Burnham comfortably (8 of 13), while the largest bloc on the platform, 25-34s, rejected him hardest of anyone, 17 votes to 9. Everyone over 45 split narrow and small, too thin to read with confidence beyond noting they leaned no as well.

Gender told a milder version of the same story: men broke against Burnham two-to-one-ish (17-11), women split dead even (10-10). Taken together, the numbers describe a candidate who struggles precisely with the mid-career, economically anxious cohort that any Labour leader now has to hold together, echoing the party's perennial fault line between its metropolitan youth wing and its harder-nosed thirty-and-forty-something base.

For a leader pitched as continuity-with-grit after Starmer's exit, the verdict from this chamber was less a rejection of the man than a shrug from the generation he most needs to convince.
